As a GC pursuing data center work, your conference strategy should focus on events where developers and their representatives are present — not events dominated by other contractors.
The most valuable events for GC BD are the developer-focused conferences: DCD Connect series, Uptime Institute Symposium, and the OCP Summit. These attract the owner's representatives, facilities teams, and capital projects groups that actually award construction contracts.
Avoid spending too much time at contractor-heavy events unless you're looking for subcontractor partners. Events like ENR conferences and general construction trade shows have limited DC developer attendance.
At every event, your goal is to meet three types of people: (1) developer capital projects managers who influence GC selection, (2) engineering consultants who recommend GCs to their developer clients, and (3) other GCs who might need partners for joint ventures on large campus projects.
The pre-conference briefing matters enormously for GCs. Before attending any event, know which developers are currently in permitting or pre-construction in the event's market. If you can reference a specific project in conversation — "I saw you're going through permitting in Loudoun County" — you immediately establish credibility.
Speak at events whenever possible. A GC project manager presenting a case study on a completed data center project is the most effective marketing in this industry. It demonstrates capability without being a sales pitch.
